Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Posted on May 30, 2023|By Michelle Brier

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated every May. We are wrapping up this heritage month by profiling two of our Asian American Pacific Islander colleagues.

Thy Bui, LAS-based ASO Manager

Where are you from? What’s your ethnic heritage? I am Vietnamese-American. I haven’t had the opportunity to visit Vietnam myself yet, but I can’t wait for the day that I can!

What’s your Frontier story? How did you come to work for Frontier? I started off working for Charter Express, our ground handling business partner in RDU. I absolutely loved it! I’ve had the opportunity to grow within the operation from the perspective of a business partner, and I have always felt continued support from Frontier, so I was incredibly excited when I had the chance to work with Frontier in LAS as an Inflight Coordinator and now an ASO Manager!

What do you love most about working for Frontier? The people. Easily. Frontier has always provided a family feel for me, and I’ve been fortunate enough to work with so many incredibly talented individuals who continue to motivate, mentor, and inspire me.

Any special moments or memories you’d like to share, involving Frontier or your career? Gosh, there have been so many over the years! A few years after starting my career with Team Frontier in RDU, I thought I’d try my hand at moving across the country (to SFO) and working in an entirely different field. Only then did I realize that I missed the airline industry dearly, but was fortunate enough to have built strong professional relationships during my time with Team Frontier. An old colleague reached out to me in regards to a position with Frontier’s Inflight Team in LAS. I remembered how much I loved my time working for an airline previously, and I was really intrigued and excited to learn another aspect of the airline within a different department! After spending 3 years away, there was absolutely no hesitation on my end to come back, and I believe that that is a testament to how much I have always loved this place and airline! Another special memory that comes to mind involved making the wish of a young traveler from the Make-A-Wish foundation come true. She had always wanted to meet Disney Princesses in real life, so before she boarded her flight to MCO with her family, I made sure that Princesses Belle and Cinderella were there to greet her!

Any words of wisdom or inspiration you’d like to share? Do what you love!

What’s something about you that many may not know? Though my family is from Vietnam, and I grew up in America, I was actually born in Germany and spent the first 4 years of my childhood there. I am extremely fond of Germany, and vividly remember my earliest memories there. In a way, I consider myself “tri-cultural”!

Hjolaine “Yo” Jesus, LAS-based ASO Manager

Where are you from? What’s your ethnic heritage? I am of Hawaiian heritage, from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

What’s your Frontier story? How did you come to work for Frontier? I joined Team Frontier as an employee of Worldwide Flight Services, our ground handling business partner in LAS, in 2014. After working nearly 5 years in the airport operations side of the house, I gave cargo operations a try. I missed the airport operations environment greatly, so imagine my surprise when I heard that Frontier was looking for an ASO Manager in LAS! I always hoped to work directly for a major airline one day, so I applied, was hired in November of 2022, and never looked back! The opportunity during the interview process was great, the diversity here within the company is what attracted me most when working as the business partner. Hired on in November 2022, never looked back. Met a lot of great people along the way in the 6 months that I have been here.

What do you love most about working for Frontier? I love my ASO Team so much! We are a very diverse group, not just culturally, but in our backgrounds and experiences; everyone brings something unique and valuable to the table. I also love that every day is a new learning opportunity. I’ve learned so much from my colleagues, both as individuals and as a collective team!

Any special moments or memories you’d like to share, involving Frontier or your career? Frontier used to hold a friendly, annual competition called the “Summer Classic,” where stations competed against each other in the various performance areas. I was working for WFS at the time, on the Frontier account, and Team Las Vegas won the Summer Classic for 3 straight years! The amount of hard work, dedication, and perseverance that went into winning each award was immense, and I still treasure the memories involved with each proud win!

Any words of wisdom or inspiration you’d like to share? Be patient, be accountable, and always act with intention; you never know who may be counting on you as a person and as a leader. What’s something about you that many may not know? With my Hawaiian heritage comes a very rich cultural background and upbringing. I grew up dancing hula, and like most Hawaiian ladies, love wearing tropical flowers in my hair!
