The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Texas (Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee); named Austin being the state capital and one of our focus growth cities. In the late 1700s to 1900s, they were often captured and sold as pets. This lead to them becoming scarce. Once the cagebird trade was stopped their numbers increased again. They have been known to attack cats and even humans in defense of their nests.
