Wellington the Black-Footed Ferret

Our furry friend's name, 'Wellington,' pays tribute to Wellington, Colorado - home of the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As the most endangered species in North America - the black-footed ferret's rise in population is successfully tied to the center's efforts to produce over 4,500 ferrets since 1991. Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets were rediscovered in 1981 in Wyoming. A ranch dog brought a dead ferret home to his owners. The ranchers brought the body to a local taxidermist, who identified it as a black-footed ferret. The taxidermist called the wildlife authorities, who then surveyed the area and found a small population of ferrets. And thus, the Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Program was born.
