Crystal the Florida Manatee

Manatees are large, playful marine mammals found in shallow, lazy rivers, saltwater bays and coastal areas. During the winter months, manatees spend their time meandering the Florida waterways. By summer, they'll migrate as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts.

Despite the progress, the species remains "threatened" and federal safeguards stay in place. Today, more than 6,600 live in the Florida region. They are a migratory species and are concentrated in Florida in the winter.

Crystal is named after the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge in Crystal River, Florida. They play a major role in helping injured and orphaned manatees, as well as being in charge of setting up, monitoring and enforcing seven manatee sanctuaries.
