Chopper the Great White Shark

Meet Chopper - Our great white shark! Great white sharks, also known as white sharks, are the largest predatory fish in the world. As the top of the marine food chain, great white sharks like Chopper play an important role in keeping the ocean's ecosystem in balance. He feeds on a broad spectrum of prey, from small fish, to large seals and dolphins.

Great whites typically grow to 15 feet in length and weigh between 2,000-4,000 pounds, but there are records of great whites weighing up to 5,000 pounds. They are incredibly fast, capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 mph. The great white's heavy, torpedo-shaped body is perfectly designed for hunting.

Although Chopper is a fearsome predator, he is also a vulnerable creature in need of protection. Unfortunately, the great white's numbers are decreasing due to years of hunting by humans for fins and teeth, as well as for sport fishing. Commercial fisheries also inadvertently catch white sharks as bycatch, and they can become tangled in fishing nets and beach protection meshes. The International Union for Conservation of Nature currently lists the white shark as vulnerable. We must do our part to ensure that this species is protected and respected so that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty and power.
