Much of the precious scrub habitat has been lost to these pressures, leading to a staggering 90% decline in scrub-jay numbers over the past century. As the sole bird species endemic to Florida, the Florida scrub-jay holds a unique place in the state's ecological tapestry. Recognized for its significance, the Florida scrub-jay was federally listed as threatened in 1987, marking the urgency of conservation efforts. The name Cedar pays homage to the Cedar Key Scrub Reserve, nestled along Florida's West Coast, a haven where enthusiasts can embark on guided scrub-jay hikes, immersing themselves in the bird's natural habitat. Despite these conservation efforts, the Florida scrub-jay remains vulnerable, with its population steadily decreasing.
