Axl the Axolotl

Introducing Axl the Axolotl! These fascinating creatures are native to the swampy remnants of Lake Xochimilco and its canals on the southern edge of Mexico City. Once thriving in Lake Chalco as well, sadly, most of these habitats were drained by the 1970s, leaving only Xochimilco as their sanctuary. However, the axolotl's survival hangs by a thread. Classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, their numbers have plummeted drastically. Surveys conducted in recent decades paint a grim picture, with population density declining from thousands to mere dozens per square kilometer. In the canals of Mexico City, their sole natural habitat, axolotls face the threat of extinction. Urgent conservation efforts are crucial to save these remarkable creatures from vanishing altogether.
