Verde the Resplendent Quetzal

The resplendent quetzals are startling emerald jewels of the cloud forest. They are classified as "near threatened" on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and their population decreasing. The resplendent quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala. It is estimated there are only 50,000 quetzals remaining in the wild. Verde received his name for his green body and habitat, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a forest that is always nearly shrouded in clouds and the most famous habitat in Costa Rica for the Quetzal.
